3D Capture Technology

Powerful 3D camera

The system installed in our practice is the Vectra M3, from Canfield Scientific. It uses a system of three capturing units, that function like a synchronised camera.

This means that the moment when the photograph is taken is just as short as if it was captured by a simple camera.

You will need to sit on an adjustable stool in front of the camera, whilst the picture is taken.

The capturing process

After positioning in front of the camera using the on-screen guidelines, it only takes a split second for the imaging system to capture 3 different views of your face at very precise angles.

The images are then analysed by a very powerful computer and a high detail, three-dimensional surface is created that can be used afterwards for analysis and procedure planning.

Getting the perfect 3D shot every time

Preparing for the 3D capture can help ensure everything goes well and the best possible image is obtained.

  • Heavy make up can make it difficult for the capture to take place accurately, and is best avoided on the day of the consultation.
  • Similarly, earrings and piercings can create problems, as does the beard.
  • The high collar a potential problem for imaging the neck, and it is best avoided.
  • An occasional problem is related to oiliness of the skin. Wiping the skin or washing the face just before the capture ensures increased quality and accuracy of the image.
  • With current technologies, it is virtually impossible to capture adequately the hair, and therefore it is often useful to have a headband that pulls the hair back.
  • The more comfortable and relaxed you appear, the better the 3D model will turn out. Relax your lips in a natural way but avoid smiling while the photographs are being taken.

The final 3D Model

Technology advancements have made it possible for the face or body to be photographed and presented as a shape on the computer.

This makes it possible to understand the nature of the problems during the consultation. With that comes the strengths to evaluate the options for change.

Once the 3d model is processed, the in-depth analysis and 3D procedure planning can begin.
